MNS 2027 - GENERAL INFORMATION
Welcome to Tangier: Where the Mediterranean Meets the Atlantic
The 11th Mediterranean Neuroscience Society Conference (MNS 2027) will take place in Tangier, Morocco, from 5-9 June 2027. Few cities could provide a more meaningful setting for a meeting dedicated to connecting neuroscientists across the Mediterranean and beyond.
Located at the northern tip of Morocco on the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier occupies an extraordinary geographical position: here, the Mediterranean Sea opens into the Atlantic Ocean, while Africa faces Europe across one of the world's most historically important maritime passages. The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes Tangier as a place where Mediterranean and Atlantic waters converge and as a bridge between Europe and Africa.

A symbolic home for Mediterranean neuroscience
For MNS, Tangier has a special significance. Geographically, it stands at the western gateway of the Mediterranean, where the Mediterranean world meets the Atlantic. Culturally, it has been a meeting point between Africa, Europe and the wider Mediterranean for centuries.
This makes Tangier an especially appropriate home for MNS 2027. The mission of the Mediterranean Neuroscience Society has always been to create scientific bridges—particularly between the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean, while connecting our region with the wider international neuroscience community. Tangier embodies that mission in its geography, history and culture.
At Cape Spartel, just outside the city, delegates can experience this geography directly, looking out toward the waters linking the Atlantic and the Strait of Gibraltar. Nearby, the famous Caves of Hercules combine spectacular Atlantic scenery with mythology and archaeological heritage.

A crossroads of civilizations
Tangier's identity has been shaped by centuries of encounters among peoples and cultures. Its strategic position brought successive Mediterranean and European influences, while the city remained deeply rooted in Moroccan culture.
This cosmopolitan character became particularly pronounced in the twentieth century, when Tangier acquired an international status and developed into an extraordinary meeting place for diplomats, merchants, writers, artists and travellers.
That legacy remains visible today in the coexistence of the historic Medina and Kasbah, Hispano-Moorish architecture, European-influenced buildings and squares, traditional souks, cafés, galleries and a modern waterfront.

A city of culture, art and ideas
Tangier has long exercised a special attraction on writers and artists. Eugène Delacroix and Henri Matisse were inspired by its landscapes and light, while writers including Tennessee Williams and Paul Bowles became closely associated with the city's international cultural life.

That tradition continues. Tangier was selected by UNESCO as the Global Host City for International Jazz Day 2024, the first African city to receive that role, highlighting its historic connections between Moroccan, European and African musical cultures. In 2025, Tangier also joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a Creative City of Literature.

For an international scientific conference, this history of openness, creativity and exchange provides an inspiring setting for new ideas, scientific discussion and collaboration.
Discover Tangier
Beyond the scientific programme, MNS 2027 participants will have the opportunity to discover one of Morocco's most distinctive cities.
The Medina invites visitors into its maze of narrow streets, traditional shops and whitewashed buildings. Above it stands the historic Kasbah, overlooking the sea and the Strait. The Grand Socco forms a lively transition between the old and newer parts of the city, while Tangier's waterfront and Corniche reveal its contemporary Mediterranean character.
Outside the city, Cape Spartel, the Atlantic beaches and the Caves of Hercules offer some of northern Morocco's most dramatic coastal landscapes. The Rif region and destinations such as Tétouan, Chefchaouen and Asilah also make Tangier an excellent starting point for delegates wishing to discover more of northern Morocco.
Tangier and MNS 2027: Connecting Shores, People and Ideas
There is perhaps no better place to express the spirit of the Mediterranean Neuroscience Society.
At Tangier, two bodies of water meet. Two continents face one another. Cultures have crossed paths for centuries.
In June 2027, we will add another connection: neuroscientists from the Mediterranean region and around the world coming together to exchange knowledge, create collaborations, support the next generation and advance our understanding of the brain.
Welcome to Tangier. Welcome to Morocco. Welcome to MNS 2027.
